Introduction: Splicing is an emerging cancer hallmark influencing multiple tumor cell (dys)functions. We have shown that aberrantly spliced variants of somatostatin receptor subtype 5 (sst5TMD4) and of the pleiotropic neuropeptide ghrelin (in1ghrelin) are linked to poor prognosis in gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEPNETs) and may enhance their aggressiveness features.

#521 Cachexia in Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors: A Comparison with Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma
Introduction: Patients with pancreatic cancer (pCA) have a high propensity for cachexia even in the absence of metastases. On the other hand, patients with pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (pNET) often maintain their weight and muscle mass for a long period of time even with liver metastases.

#140 Serotonin expression in gastric neuroendocrine tumors and in foci of endocrine cell hyperplasia
Introduction: The most abundant neuroendocrine (NE) cell population of the human oxyntic mucosa is the enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells, followed by ghrelin, somatostatin and serotonin cells, respectively. All types of ECL cell carcinoids (ECL-CCs) contain serotonin cells but in a varying frequency. Hitherto, only foci of ECL and ghrelin cell hyperplasia have been described in the peritumorous mucosa of types I and II ECL-CCs. It is established that hypergastrinaemia can cause ECL cell hyperplasia but it does not affect serotonin cells. The vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT 2) is used as an immunohistochemical marker for ECL cells.

#46 Neuroendocrine markers are expressed in human mammary glands
Introduction: Regulatory peptides have previously been detected in epithelial cells of human mammary glands. As these peptides are produced by scattered neuroendocrine cells in the epithelium of other tissues the aim of this study was to investigate whether the mammary glands express molecular markers for neuroendocrine cells.
